Radda in Chianti

How to get around Radda in Chianti

Getting around

Radda has no railway station and is reached by road. It sits in the hills between Castellina in Chianti, Gaiole in Chianti, Greve in Chianti, Castelnuovo Berardenga and Cavriglia, and every approach is a hill road.

The centre has a limited-traffic zone. The comune's Ufficio Polizia Locale handles the ZTL alongside road policing and parking, and keeps its own address for it; the office is reachable on 0577 739622 or 0577 739623, Monday to Saturday 08:30–13:30. Park outside and walk in.

In the town, everything is on foot and it is small. One main street, a square with the Palazzo del Podestà and the church, and lesser lanes closing into a ring. The convent of Santa Maria al Prato is just below the centre, on Circonvallazione Santa Maria.

The frazioni need the car. Eight of them, from Lucarelli at 285 metres to Badia a Montemuro at 706, spread over 80.56 square kilometres. Volpaia, the one most visitors want, is at 617 metres.

For anything else, ask the comune. Its switchboard is 0577 739633, at Piazza Ferrucci 1.

How easily, and at what cost, can you combine the region’s main destinations?

RouteBest optionOne-way timeTravel Smart take
Radda in Chianti and Castellina in ChiantiCarmoderate cost~15 min by roadExcellent day-trip connection. Radda in Chianti works well as a base for Castellina in Chianti.
Radda in Chianti and Greve in ChiantiCarmoderate cost~30 min by roadExcellent day-trip connection. Radda in Chianti works well as a base for Greve in Chianti.

Cost compares the options for each route rather than quoting a fare: inexpensive means the price is not a factor in planning, moderate cost means a real line in the budget, and the expensive option is one worth weighing against the alternative. Fares change from year to year; the ranking between them does not.

Driving. Radda is inland Chianti: the approaches come over the ridges from Castellina to the west, Gaiole to the south-east, Greve to the north and Castelnuovo Berardenga to the south. All are winding hill roads carrying farm traffic in season.

Parking and the ZTL. The historic centre is a limited-traffic zone administered by the comune's Polizia Locale — the same office that covers road policing, building and environmental enforcement — contactable on 0577 739622 / 0577 739623, Monday to Saturday 08:30–13:30, with a dedicated ZTL address. Leave the car outside the walls.

Reaching Volpaia. North of the town, up to 617 metres, on the ridge running from Badia a Montemuro towards Radda. The borgo is small, walled and not built for vehicles.

Reaching the convent. The Casa Chianti Classico is at Circonvallazione Santa Maria 18, on the ring road immediately below the historic centre — walkable from the piazza.

On foot and by bike. Radda is a trailhead. The Chianti Ultra Trail's three routes of 15, 42 and 73 km all start here, and the permanent Eroica route runs the white roads south into the Crete Senesi and the Val d'Orcia.
