Castello di Conegliano Site Features

What is here is a fragment, and worth understanding as one. The Torre della Campana is the surviving keep, square and plain, with the museum arranged over its floors; the rest of the castle is walls, gates and earthworks rather than buildings.

The setting does the work. The hill is steep enough that the fortress needed little else, and the terraced gardens laid out within the old walls make the ruin legible rather than picturesque.

From the top the geology of the whole district is obvious in a way no map conveys: the morainic ridges running west in parallel lines, and the flat plain stopping against them.

The view

The Prosecco hills to the west, the plain to the south, and the Prealps behind -- the single best orientation to the district.
