Origins

The street follows the line of the medieval road through the town, below the castle and above the plain, and has been the commercial spine since at least the fourteenth century.

Turning points

Under Venetian rule from 1389 the merchant families rebuilt along it in the Republic's own idiom -- pointed arches, deep loggias, painted facades -- which is why a small inland town looks the way Venice's canal fronts do.

Influential people

Cima da Conegliano was born on this street around 1459; the house survives and is now a small museum.

Cultural evolution

The frescoing of facades was standard practice here as in Treviso: colour and pattern rather than carved stone, which was cheaper and, in the event, far less durable.

Present-day significance

It remains the town's working high street, and the arcades are used as they always were.
