The original design is a hortus sphaericus: a circle roughly 84 metres across, enclosed by a wall, quartered by two paths crossing at right angles. The geometry is not decorative -- it was a filing system, dividing the collection into orderly beds a student could learn by walking.
Later centuries added gates, fountains and glasshouses around the circle without disturbing it, which is the main reason the 1545 layout survives intact enough to read on the ground.
The Garden of Biodiversity of 2014 is deliberately the opposite: a long glass and steel structure holding five climate zones, sited outside the historic wall so that the old garden keeps its own edges. The contrast between the two is unusually well handled.
Site Features
Goethe's palm
A fan palm planted in 1585, now housed in its own tall glasshouse. Older than most of the buildings around it and directly implicated in a foundational idea in botany.
The original circle
The 1545 layout, walled and quartered, still planted as beds. Walking it is the point: the design was meant to be learned on foot.
The Garden of Biodiversity
Five climate zones under glass, from rainforest to arid, in a 2014 building. A genuine modern greenhouse rather than a Victorian relic.
The medicinal beds
The garden still grows poisonous and medicinal plants in a dedicated section, labelled — a direct continuation of what it was founded to do.
Landscape
The garden sits at the southern edge of Padua's historic centre, between the Basilica of Saint Anthony and Prato della Valle, with all three within a few minutes of each other on foot.
It is walled, which matters more than it sounds: inside, the noise of the city drops away almost completely, and the enclosure is the reason the garden reads as a room rather than a park.
The ground is flat Po Valley alluvium and the water table is high, which is part of why the site works — and why the garden has grown plants here successfully for nearly five centuries without irrigation engineering.
