Montreal's major sights fall into useful clusters. In the historic core, Notre-Dame Basilica, Place d'Armes, Pointe-à-Callière and the Old Port connect architecture, archaeology and the river. Downtown, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts makes a natural anchor for the Golden Square Mile.

East of the centre, the Montreal Botanical Garden, Biodome, Insectarium and Olympic Park can fill most of a day. The Jean-Talon Market and Little Italy deserve a separate neighbourhood visit rather than a rushed detour between monuments.
