Montreal

Discover Montreal

A concise introduction to Montreal, its geography, history and culture.

Introduction

Montreal is a French-speaking island metropolis where the St. Lawrence River, Mount Royal and a sequence of distinct neighbourhoods give the city its shape. Visitors come for Old Montreal, major museums, food markets and one of North America's most active festival calendars. What distinguishes the city is the ease with which daily life, design and public culture spill into streets, parks and repurposed industrial spaces.

The historic core and downtown are only the opening chapters. The Plateau and Mile End reveal the city's plexes and small creative businesses; Little Italy and Jean-Talon Market connect food to migration; the Lachine Canal turns industrial history into a long recreational corridor. Montreal rewards a trip built around two or three neighbourhoods, not a checklist confined to the old town.

Frequently asked questions

How many days does Montreal need? Three days cover the historic core, Mount Royal or a major museum, and one neighbourhood corridor. Four or five days make room for several districts, an event and a weather buffer.

Do I need a car? Usually not. Metro, buses, walking and occasional BIXI trips cover the main visitor areas. A car adds parking complexity and is most useful for travel beyond the urban network.

Is Montreal bilingual? French is the official public language; English is common in many visitor settings. Begin politely in French and do not assume every interaction will default to English.

When is the best time? Late May through June and September into early October usually balance outdoor conditions and an active calendar. Summer has the largest programme and strongest demand; winter is rewarding when planned as winter.

How do I reach the airport? The 747 bus currently runs between Montréal–Trudeau and the metro/downtown network all day and night. The REM airport branch is scheduled for 2027 and is not yet the current connection.

Is the metro accessible? Only some stations have step-free access, although regular buses are accessible. Check the exact station and current elevator status before each journey.

Is Mount Royal a volcano? No. It formed from magma that cooled below ground and was later exposed by erosion; it is not an extinct volcano.
