Keep a little mystery in your trip planning: Explorer Picture Mode shows a stylized version of every place instead of the real photo, so you can go by the description and reviews first and picture it your own way -- reveal the real photo any time by flipping the switch off, or just for one place at a time from its own page.

Visiting Harpers Ferry

Changed
The historic town of Harpers Ferry, Jefferson County, West Virginia, USA, is situated at the mouth of the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers where the three states of Virginia, West Virginia and Maryland meet. These two rivers form a low altitude flood plain which is surrounded by land at a higher altitude.

If you come by to Harpers Ferry, you will find that its lower part is situated within Harpers Ferry National Historical Park. The other part of the town is included in the Harpers Ferry Historic District.

If you love walking, you can start your walk at the Appalachian Trail Conservancy (ATC) headquarters and go through the town and on to the Appalachian Trail. You can also go white water rafting, tubing, fishing, and canoeing, hiking, mountain biking and rock climbing at Harpers Ferry. Alternatively, you could also take a ferry right across the Potomac River and soar through the air.

If you’re not scared of spirits and ghosts, you can go on a ghost tour of Harpers Ferry. This is an hour’s walking tour of all the buildings in the town which have ghostly stories attached to them. This is part of the town’s history and legend. You can also check out the National Paranormal History Museum and the Haunted Cottage’s ghost tours. You even can visit the John Brown Wax Museum, which tells the story of this abolitionist, right from his birth to his death on the gallows.
