Keep a little mystery in your trip planning: Explorer Picture Mode shows a stylized version of every place instead of the real photo, so you can go by the description and reviews first and picture it your own way -- reveal the real photo any time by flipping the switch off, or just for one place at a time from its own page.

Colombia
Practical Information
Colombia's mountainous terrain makes domestic flying the fastest and often cheapest way to cover long distances -- Avianca and several budget carriers connect Bogotá with every major city, and flying is standard even for trips that look short on a map, since Andean roads wind through mountain passes rather than running direct.
Long-distance buses are extensive and comfortable on major routes, but genuinely slow given the terrain -- a bus ride that covers 300km by road can easily take 8-10 hours. Within cities, Bogotá's TransMilenio bus rapid transit system and app-based rideshares are the standard way to get around.
Getting to smaller colonial towns like Barichara usually means a shared van or private transfer from the nearest larger city rather than public transit directly.
Colombia's safety has improved dramatically since the 2016 peace agreement, and the country's major tourist circuits -- Bogotá, Cartagena, the Coffee Region, and Santander's colonial towns -- are visited by millions of travelers each year without incident. That said, real regional variation still exists, and a few practical precautions go further here than in many other South American destinations.
