In West Virginia’s Eastern Panhandle you’ll find Bath or Berkeley Springs, known for being the country’s first spa. The county seat of Morgan County, it was incorporated as Bath, but it is often called by its name at the post office, Berkeley Springs.
Bath was a popular natural resort with its mineral springs inviting people to this small town. Some of these visitors were George Washington and James Rumsey. Bath is the sister city of Bath in England and gets the name Berkeley from Berkeley Castle here that overlooks this small town.
Even today, it is popular for its resort, making tourism the main industry here, due to the presence of its four spas that are in full service. No wonder, it is home to the Berkeley Springs International Water Tasting, the largest and longest running such event in the world.
Apart from the spas, there’s a lot you can do here. You can visit the Berkeley Springs State Park, a four-acre village green in the heart of town. These are the largest mineral springs of the Blue Ridge spas. George Washington bathed in the waters here. There’s also Cacapon State Park which has a lake, golf course and a lodge, apart from many hiking trails, especially one that ends in Cacapon Rocks, George Washington's favorite ride. For serenity and peace and quiet and mountain hiking trails, go to the Eidolon Nature Preserve.
