Overview
Festa del Redentore commemorates the end of the 1575-1577 plague and the construction of the Church of the Redeemer (Il Redentore) on Giudecca, built by the Republic of Venice in thanks. A temporary pontoon bridge is built across the Giudecca Canal each year so residents and visitors can walk from the Zattere to the church.
The festival is best known for its Saturday night fireworks display over the Bacino di San Marco, traditionally watched from decorated boats on the water or from the waterfront. A church service and boat procession follow on Sunday.
