Overview
Founded in 1895, the Venice Biennale is one of the most prominent recurring exhibitions in contemporary art and architecture. It alternates by year: the International Art Exhibition runs in odd-numbered years and the International Architecture Exhibition in even-numbered years, each typically opening in spring and remaining on view into autumn.
Dozens of countries maintain national pavilions in the Giardini and the Arsenale complex, alongside a large central themed exhibition curated by an appointed director. Entry requires a paid ticket to the Giardini and Arsenale venues; prices and dates are set anew for each edition.
