Best destinations by month
Spring and early autumn usually offer milder conditions than July and August, but they are not reliably quiet. Easter, long weekends, Biennale and film-festival dates, and major events can produce heavy crowding.
November, early December and much of January are often calmer, with cool, damp weather and a greater chance of fog or acqua alta. Christmas, New Year and Carnival are important exceptions. Winter can feel atmospheric and less congested, but Venice should never be described as empty.
Crowding varies as much by hour as by month. Early mornings and evenings are generally easier on the principal route between Rialto and Piazza San Marco. Check the official events calendar, tide forecast and annual access-fee dates before finalizing a visit.
