Overview

The Lake Geneva Region is situated on the Western region of the country of Switzerland. This region surrounds the northern side of Lake Geneva. The city of Geneva itself lies at the most south-western part of the region.

Travelers that visit this region all year round are captivated with the immense beauty of the region. Located right underneath the majestic Swiss Alps, the Lake Geneva Region has been known to emanate its own unique radiance and splendor. After all, the region is situated right in the heart of a breathtaking countryside and picturesque landscapes. It is for this reason that many travelers visiting the areas spend most of their time engaging in activities held in the great outdoors.

Practically surrounded by the country of France, Geneva has been recognized as one of the most cosmopolitan area in the country. The city is the second most populated city in all of Switzerland, next to the country’s capital of Zurich. Its close proximity to France has made the canton of Geneva as one of the prime wine producing regions in Switzerland.

Although not the capital of the country, Geneva has long been recognized as the center of commerce, finance and trade in Switzerland. It is also home to the European headquarters of the United Nations as well as the headquarters of the International Labor Organization. These headquarters, as well as those of the International Red Cross and the Red Crescent Museum are partially opened to the public and are listed among the prime tourist destinations in the canton’s capital.

The best time to visit is during the month of September. During this month, the canton comes alive with the observance of Jeûne Genevois. Held from the first Thursday to the first Sunday of the month of September, this holiday is very similar to the celebration of Thanksgiving in the United States. According to history accounts, the holiday is celebrated in commemoration of the receiving of the news regarding the St. Bartholomew’s Day massacre which occurred in 1572 AD.

Apart from its immense natural beauty, the Lake Geneva Region also boasts a rich historical and cultural heritage. There are a number of different guided tours which travelers can take to castles, amphitheaters and ancient ruins dating as far back during the height of the Roman Empire. One of the prime tourist destinations in the Lake Geneva Region is the Eglise de St-Maurice du Cloître located in the town of Aigle. This medieval castle was built in the 12th century and also known as the Castle of the Eagle. A splendid piece of architecture, the castle is situated right beside the church of the Eagle which has been recognized as an exquisite example of Gothic architecture and design.

The Lake Geneva Region is also home to a number of different museums, each providing travelers a glimpse of the rich history of the country from food to wine to science fiction. If you are planning to visit any of these museums, it is a good idea to grab a Swiss Museum Passport. This would grant you access to all of the museums within the region as well as other tourist attractions and destination for a minimal fee.
