The museum's own history is short and almost entirely institutional. Its building is seven centuries older than the collection in it, and its two most famous objects spent decades on the wrong continent before arriving.

Chronology

  1. 4th c. B.C. The Etruscan walls later incorporated into the castle are built. They are the oldest fabric on the site.
  2. 1200s The Ruspoli castle goes up in masonry of tufa, lava and brick, with several towers and a rectangular block, absorbing those Etruscan wall sections into a structure the comune describes as a true fortified polygon.
  3. 1900s The Museo nazionale cerite is established in the castle, dedicated to Etruscan art from the necropoleis of ancient Caere, and named for Princess Claudia Ruspoli.
  4. From December the culture ministry manages the museum through the Polo museale del Lazio.
  5. The Euphronios krater and kylix arrive. Both Attic red-figure vases of the 5th century B.C., they had been looted in illegal excavations around Cerveteri and exported, the krater exhibited for years at the Metropolitan Museum in New York and the kylix at the Getty in Malibu; returned to the Italian State and first placed at Villa Giulia in Rome, they are now assigned here permanently. The museum records 19,015 visitors in the same year.
  6. The museum becomes part of the Parco archeologico di Cerveteri e Tarquinia.
