Come late afternoon and climb for the light on the plain from the upper chapels. The keep on the summit is a rough path beyond the chapels and worth the extra ten minutes.

Monselice, Este and Montagnana sit on connecting railway lines and make a natural trio of walled towns. Arquà Petrarca is twenty minutes into the hills.

The chapels are a devotional route, not merely a viewpoint path, and are still used as one. Walk it quietly.

Villa Duodo is not open to the public; it is passed on the way up, and photographed from the road rather than entered.

The summit keep is a ruin without railings in places — take care, particularly with children.

The castle runs on guided tours with limited places. Booking, and turning up for the slot you booked, is what keeps that model viable. Arriving by train is easy here and avoids adding cars to a town centre wrapped around a hill.
