Keep a little mystery in your trip planning: flip this switch on and Explorer Picture Mode shows a stylized version of every place instead of the real photo, so you can go by the description and reviews first and picture it your own way -- turn it off again any time, or reveal the real photo for just one place at a time from its own page.

Architecture

Changed

Longhena's facade is one of the most sculptural on the Grand Canal: a heavily rusticated ground floor, its stonework carved into deep, diamond-faceted blocks, supports two upper stories of paired colossal columns framing arched windows -- a double loggia effect that reads almost like a stack of triumphal arches rather than a conventional palace front.

The undisputed highlight of the modern art collection is Gustav Klimt's Judith II (1909), acquired not long after it was painted and now one of the most recognizable single artworks on public display in Venice. The Museum of Oriental Art's Edo-period Japanese armor and Hokusai prints offer a completely different register of craftsmanship under the same Baroque roof.
